Bristol - @ Bristol

Britol city centre

Bristol City Centre

The City Council have spent a great deal of time and money renovating our city centre. Some people absolutely hate what they've done, and some days I think it looks like a watery car park, but on the whole I think it looks quite good.

Another good thing about the new city is that they are finally doing away with the ghastly concrete eyesores that the architects thought were so cool in the 1960's, and are putting up buildings into which someone has at least put a bit of thought into, like these offices pictured above.

The city centre from the docks

Many, many years ago the river was bridged and our city centre grew up. It's hard to think that even to a time just before WWII, only some 60 years ago, that this was a busy port.

Just a short walk away from the centre, on the site of a couple of old warehouses and a car park the Council have built one of the most innovative new city centre complexes I've seen. The last part of it, Wildscreen was finished and opened in July 2000. Amongst the obligatory bars there is an IMAX film theatre and a hands on science centre.

Our new plaza

A view of our new plaza

The helium balloon is the one from which lots of the aerial pictures of Bristol on these pages were taken from in the summer of 1999. The tower with the colourful @ Bristol logo is one of the ventilation towers for the underground car park.

Scattered around the plaza are several statues in life like poses,
they certainly add interest to the site.

The Cathedral, which is nearly 1000 years old seen through the glass wall of a building a week old (in June 2000). Which one will still be here after just 100 more years ?
