This web site was produced :-

Wholly by myself, using a PC with a Cyrix 486 DX2 100 processor and 16Mb of RAM. Images were scanned using a Mustek 12000SP scanner. The computer was upgraded in September 1999 to an AMD K6 II 450 processor and 64Mb of RAM. In November 2000 this was upgraded to 182Mb.

After moving to the US in September 2001 the computer has become an AMD 1.5GHz processor with 256Mb PC2400 DDR SDRAM memory on an Abit KG7 motherboard. The system also has a Diamond Monster Sound MX400 sound card, with cheap Labtec speakers as I don't need sensoround sound etc. A Leadtek WinFast GeForce MX video card driving an Envison EN-5100 15" LCD monitor. Pioneer DVD 116. Logitech keyboard and Microsoft  IntelliEye optical mouse. Logitech QuickCam and best of all a Verizon DSL connection. I'm using a HP Deskjet 812C printer attached to Patty's Mac for printing also a Microtek Scanmaster X6 on the Mac for scanning.

Finally got fed up of transferring files backwards and forwards to the Mac, so in April 2002 went on another spending spree. Video capture is now done by a Belkin USB VideoBus II. Scanning is done using a Visioneer USB 8920 and printing is now done by a Lexmark Z45. As these are USB devices they are joined to the computer via a Micro mobile USB hub.

The software used is :-

Micrografx Picture Publisher v8 - Graphics processing

Microsoft FrontPage 2000 - HTML editing and layout

PicoSearch - Free site specific search engine

ProBoards - Provider of the message board

RingSurf - Provider of the RingSurf webring system

WebRing - Provider of the WebRing webring system

The images and text used are :-

Background JPG - copied from the backgrounds supplied with Microsoft Office 97 Professional

The images in Optical Illusions are from various sources, some have been drawn in Corel Draw 3. Most are GIFs, the main ones being saved at 100dpi and 3" and 100dpi and 1" for the thumbnails.

The images in the War Stories and my dads Navy Days section are from my collection of photographs. These were scanned at 300dpi, reduced to 100dpi and resized to 3" for the larger photos or 1" for the thumbnails. They were retouched in Micrografx Picture Publisher before being resaved as JPGs with 20% compression.

Banner GIFs - the first ones were produced in Corel PhotoPaint and then the transparencies added in Alchemy Mindworks GIF Construction Set. The later ones were produced in Micrografx Picture Publisher and the transparencies added using Microsoft GIF Animator.

The text is all mine (including any spelling mitsakes).

Site History

5th June 1999 - This site was first uploaded and again about two hours later when I realised how case sensitive the Web is. ie GIFs not displaying etc. Uploaded again after sorting out some minor errors and adding more images to Optical Illusions.

6th June 1999 - Site URL submitted to Alta Vista, Excite, Lycos and Yahoo. More images added to Optical Illusions. The larger GIFs converted to JPGs.

11th June 1999 - More images for Illusions added, photos of me in Biog. page added. Started to improve the links between pages, when clicking on the thumbnails, some at least, should take you to the appropriate page and display the larger graphic. More to do on this though. URL submitted to UK Plus.

12th June 1999 - Links now complete. Directory structure organised and links amended (again). 200+ files in one directory was leading to some confusion, especially as more pages are planned.

20th June 1999 - Dads Navy Days pages started, but still less than a quarter complete.

11th July 1999 - Some of the maps redrawn - the first ones were horrible. More pages added to Dads Navy Days. This is going far more slowly than I first thought.

23rd July 1999 - First album now complete. More pages added to Dads Navy Days. The only search engine that seems to be carrying this URL is UK Plus. Re-uploaded because site ceased to work with Netscape. Internet Explorer is unfussy about backslashes / forwardslashes in links but Netscape expects all links to be forward facing.

I've also added a site counter and site statistics from Gostats. While I was at it I added a guestbook and javachat from Bravenet

23rd January 2002 - Whilst looking through the site I realised that FrontPage does not produce HTML code that is tidy, so I've started going through the site seeing where improvements in the HTML can be made. On average I'm reducing the page sizes by around 10%, which should mean the loading times for some of them should be improved.

30th January 2002 - Thanks to Ray Holden an entire page dedicated to the Review of the Fleet at Spithead in 1953 added to Dads Navy Page. More Optical illusions and Bristol stuff added. The site has been down for a week as Tripod / Lycos are doing something to the servers, so I took the opportunity to tidy up the file system. Lycos / Tripod changed the site URL, so all the links to the webrings and some other stuff had to be changed. The webcounter is not at all accurate and jumps from 200 + to 3 for some reason. The stats at GoStats seem to be accurate though.

1st February 2002 - More QBasic stuff added

4th February 2002 - Finally got fed up with GoStats multiple page counter giving erroneous figures so have changed them for the Lycos / Tripod ones. I'm still using GoStats for the statistics though.

10th February 2002 - The Lycos / Tripod servers for this site are all over the place this week, not all the images are loading and the site is pig slow to load. Hopefully they'll sort this out soon. More QBasic added.

28th February 2002 - Added a forum to the Messages / Guests page

3rd & 9th March 2002 - More Bristol, Terre Haute and QBasic stuff added. More problems with the Lycos / Tripod servers over the last couple of weeks and the site hasn't been available for days at a time. The forum, chat and guestbook aren't as popular as I'd hoped. Still, it's early days yet and I don't intend to remove them. College is taking up most of time so I'm not doing quite so much work on the site, still got lots of ideas for it though.

13th March, 15th March, 2nd April & 9th April 2002 - More QBasic pages added. More problems with the server and the page counters.

30th August 2002 - more Bristol stuff added

11th December 2002 - Oops, it seems it's been longer than I thought since I last updated this page. Over the last couple of months the site has had quite a bit added to the various sections. I've also added a complete new page of images of the Virgin Mary in the Optical Illusion, Faces section. There is also a new section called Web. The purpose of this isn't to provide a complete guide to HTML or JavaScript etc. but to add only those parts that I've found useful.

12th December 2002 - Page on Bristol's in Canada added

13th December 2002 - Spithead Review page 2 added to Dads Navy Days - courtesy of David Killelay

16th March 2003 - Thanks to Carlos Rufino another two pages for ARA Independencia added

18th March 2003 - Thanks to Chris Marshall for sending me a photograph he took for the Optical Illusions, Faces page

21st June 2003 - I've been busy studying recently. I opted to take four classes towards my degree(s) over the short summer semester and it hasn't left much time for anything else. The pages in the Web Stuff section have been updated. I've also put the site on a new server at Fateback. The site can now be found at http://members.lycos.co.uk/brisray/, http://brisray.bravepages.com/ and http://brisray.fateback.com/

22nd June 2003 - Various pages updated, my injuries page added. I've just run Xenu's Link Check against the files again. It appears I've got over 100 invalid links to external sites. Looks like I'll be busy for a while checking them. I've introduced a system of checking the links on the site. Any I find broken I'm putting an asterisk next to. This is because the servers may be down when I test the links, rather than the site just gone. Three asterisks and I'll remove the link.

25th June 2003 - I'm not very happy with three free servers I've put the site on. Bravenet and Fateback limit the file sizes I can use. Bravenet and Lycos UK have too many ads, Lycos UK messes up the browser navigation and Fateback is pig slow. Various articles added to the war stories and optical illusions sections

27th June 2003 - Uploaded the site to 0catch. The site is now also at http://brisray.0catch.com/

8th August 2003 - The site is now available at 0Catch, Bravenet, ExactPages, Fateback and Lycos UK. Not only that but I registered the domain names brisray.com, brisray.net, brisray.org and brisray.us. I've added a page onto the Web Stuff section explaining how these sites are all hosted from a server in my cellar.

12th August 2003 - The site is now available at 0Catch, 150M, Bravenet, ExactPages, Fateback, Lycos UK and O-F. As well as the registered domain names brisray.com, brisray.net, brisray.org and brisray.us. Another page added about my home server pages.

31st January 2004 - Due to increasing bandwidth problems - my site was disabled by Lycos for 24 hours yesterday - the only server that carries any multimedia or downloads is the "Server in the Cellar"

Mr Robert Goddard for allowing me to use some of his programs on the site.

Dads Navy Days

There were two official photographers on board HMS Warrior, Kingsley Jones and Norman Ford. I should imagine that many of the photographs of Warrior on this site were taken by these two men. As the original photographs are not marked with the photographer I can't say for sure who took which photograph, but for the ones I do these are credited alongside the photographs.
