I've always enjoyed illusions and other optical tricks, and have built up a small collection of books containing some of the best. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be one definitive source for most of these so I've collected some together for this site.

War stories

I was involved with the British military system for about 15 years, and during that time saw and heard of many odd things. These pages won't give you any military secrets, nor is it one of those 'build a bomb' sites, what I hope it will do is provide a small insight into the military that the public (hopefully) rarely sees. Sometimes the joke "Military Intelligence is a mutually impossible phrase" is truer than some people would wish.

I worked for a large mailing house as a PReS programmer. Part of my work involved manipulating databases, some of which were very small - a couple of hundred records - but some were very big - several million records. As these databases were in a variety of formats I sometimes found it convenient to write small QBasic programs to manipulate them. Here are a few routines and tips that I've learnt.

My dad signed up for 12 years service in the Royal Navy in February 1948. When I was a child it was always a treat to be allowed to go through the hundreds of photographs he took of this time. Now he's gone it seems a great pity to let these photos and other documents lie unseen in the attic and so I've decided to put a selection of them on these pages.
